The awkward first meet...

Hello and thank you so much for visiting my little blog!

You can call me Sami. I'm 26 and started writing 'That redhead said...' in late 2012 to both help other people as well as myself cope with life with a mental illness. I live in Brighton with my cat, Lily, and my boyfriend, who I guess would be called my ‘childhood sweetheart’! Aww.

My biggest phobia is spiders. I don’t have a driving licence and I’ve on recently been on my first trip abroad! I have been obsessed with hair dye since I started high school. I have 9 piercings, all facial, and 7 tattoos so far! I am a huuuge animal lover and hope to one day have a farm which will also be a rescue centre.

Since the age of 18 I have been profoundly disabled due to depression and anxiety disorders, as well as anorexia nervosa and alcoholism… In 2011 I developed M.E/CFS following a series of infections and severe stress. Lucky me, eh?!

You might ask yourself why I'm putting that out there so openly. Well, in a nutshell, it's because the stigma surrounding mental health needs to stop and my blog, and what I hope to get involved with at university will be my contribution to a huge social issue.

This blog started out as nothing more than a distraction, but as it’s grown so has my belief in what this blog could become, and that everything I’ve experienced and learned about coping with these problems can maybe help others. My passion is helping people. It’s just my nature and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

‘That redhead said’ is a warts and all blog about symptoms, medications, therapies, doctors and what day-to-day life is like, through the good times and the bad. I will also share with you my love of cooking and share recipes for you to try; my habit of buying pretty clothes, shoes and home furnishings; reviewing foods and other items such as make-up and other beauty products and maybe the odd restaurant; sharing videos and pictures of my crazy kitteh, because the internet always needs more cat videos!!

I’m a total geek at heart and have always had a passion for science. I used to read science encyclopedias as a child…. So I’m combining that love with my ever growing fascination with the brain and mental illness and starting a degree in September ’13 where I will be studying Medical Neuroscience at Sussex University!

*** Disclaimer: I am not a trained therapist or a doctor. Sadly. My opinions are my own and any discussions about medication are researched thoroughly, and should absolutely not replace the advice of your GP or psychiatrist. But do ask them questions! They didn't spend most of their lives in school to keep their knowledge to themselves! ***

PR FRIENDLY BLOGGER: I am very happy to review products if I feel they are in keeping with my blog but as always my opinions are my own and not subject to bias from any source. If samples are sent to me for review I will indicate this with an asterix (*) in the blog title.

Please feel free to leave comments, tweet or email me.
I’d love to hear from you! :)

Lots of love,

  1. Wow! You are quite the inspiration! So nice to hear that blogging has been such a positive experience for you and a way of helping others!

    1. Oh gosh, thank you very much! I don't really see my journey as an inspiration yet, but this is a huge motivation to keep going. I've checked out your blog and we seem to have a little in common - I loved seeing that your doggy friend had a special place too!!! :)

Thank you for visiting my blog! :) I would love to hear from you so please leave a comment! :) xx
